Foreign oil and gas is still needed even if we rely on green energy for our electricity. Our cars are powered by gas. Our plastics are made from petroleum. These resources are not abundant in the future, but they are still the cheapest form of energy. THe oil companies are going to make sure the gov't continues to subsidies our oil and gas so that we pay for it cheaper than other countries. In europe they pay something around $7/liter. As a result, they ride bikes, scooters, and drive small cars powered by clean diesel. They get you better mileage than a prius.

Actually most of our oil comes from Canada, believe it or not. I guess we do that because we want the last reserves. They have made changes to go green, but the oil companies have them all bogged down. The last President who tried that was none other than Jimmy Carter, and it was political suicide. Now that people are more aware, we will make an effort to go green.

So that Americans have an excuse to abuse Canadian tar sands?
You know, a good way to start is to buy smaller cars. Seriously what do you need a truck for? A family of up to five needs nothing more than a station wagon. If you all recycle your green waste (includes meat) by anaerobic digestion, you can make natural gas. If you use the ocean currents produce energy, you won't have to deal with coal or natural gas. Turn the desert in california/nevada (forgot the name) for solar power. Lay off goods from the other side of the world. You can do all that, but you need money, and due to high payoff time nobody who has money wants to invest in it + the oil giants make lots of money.

How much do you think would it cost to convert all our fossil fuel guzzling vehicles and machinery to use energy from the tides? Even installing a sail and mast on a car would be costly.
