Car Repair Prices: Fuel Injection Services, Are They Worth It?

Monday, May 18th, 2009
Theodore Olson asked:

Fuel injection services are growing in popularity for the following reasons in the order of motive.

1) Increases service center’s profit

2) It’s an easy sell with today’s gas prices

3) Offsets manufacturers’ maintenance reductions

4) Poor gas quality

5) Poor adherence to vehicle maintenance

Notice that “It’s required” did not make the list. That’s because fuel injection services are not required the majority of the time.

However, injector services are at times beneficial, even necessary. See the following frequently asked question and answers…

What do they do?

Depending on the product, injection services clean naturally forming carbon deposits from the fuel injectors and fuel rails—some will even clean the fuel tank, and valve carbon deposits.

Do they work?

In short, yes. Provided it’s a premium product (such as BG), and the service is performed correctly. Fuel injection services can do amazing things. They can improve fuel efficiency, increase horse power, and repair some performance concerns, although these benefits are rare.

Whether or not fuel injection services will do all the above “every time” for your car is another story.

I have even seen fuel injection services quiet horrendous carbon knocks—a knocking noise from the engine due to excessive carbon build-up coming in contact with internal engine components.

Are they worth it?

Maybe. It really depends on the condition of the vehicle. If the service achieves any of the advertised claims, it may be worth it. In truth, most cars don’t need it. The consistent use of quality fuel, and proper vehicle maintenance should be all that is necessary to keep a car running properly.

However, consistent use of cheap gas and poor adherence to an auto maintenance schedule, as well as certain driving styles can significantly increase the accumulation of carbon deposits. Thus the possibility of poor fuel efficiency, decreased horsepower, and performance issues increases—all of which could be helped by injector maintenance.

The other factor to consider is the expense. How much fuel savings justifies the cost of the fuel injection service, and how long is the pay off. BG claims that their product will pay for itself in a year’s time. However, remember that the condition of the vehicle is a big variable! If the car doesn’t need it, there’s no benefit.

How often should it be done?

It depends on the product, but generally between 15,000 to 30,000-miles.

Are they necessary?

It depends: See the discussion under Are they worth it?

Can a fuel injection service do any damage to my engine or car?

Not if done correctly. Done incorrectly, anything goes. A technician could conceivably hydro-lock your engine, or blow a hole in the piston—although both scenarios are rare.

If anything does go wrong, there is usually an underlying problem, which gets exacerbated by the fuel injector auto maintenance.

Why doesn’t my manufacturer recommend fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance?

No manufacturer recommends fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance under normal operating conditions. From a manufacturer’s viewpoint: take care of your car right (i.e., as the manufacturer dictates) and you’ll be fine.

However, depending on the problem, some manufacturers will recommend fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance as the cure—especially carbon knock. With the wide variety of fuel qualities available, manufacturers are reconsidering fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance.

How much does fuel injector cleaning auto maintenance cost?

Prices vary depending on the service center and the actual procedure performed, and product used. The procedure you want should clean the entire fuel system including the tank and should not cost more than $150.

Also, make sure the service is actually performed as fuel injector maintenance is a common scam across the industry.

Lastly, fuel injection maintenance is often presented in such a way as if it is the magical cure for all your car’s quirks—it not!

When in doubt, don’t do it.

The Trend For Renewable Energy Is Growing More Everyday

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
Rick Williamson asked:

Renewable energy is a growing trend in our world today and is going to grow much more as the need to supplement our global energy continues. These energy sources are pollution free since they are don’t admit carbons that are found in fossil fuels. Another advantage of using renewable energy is the fact that it helps in the fight against global warming. Exploring this energy allows homeowners to take the first step in breaking free of dependence on overpriced natural gas and electricity. Most novice homeowners will have no trouble in their energy generation efforts if they are interested in harnessing the power of solar energy, water and wind power. In addition to solar power, you can use hydro to supplement your energy system.

The energy obtained by harnessing the sun light and converting it to power is called solar energy. Harnessing the suns energy is done by using collectors placed on the roof of your house. These solar panels are made up of semi-conductive materials. Six hours of sunlight is capable of producing enough electricity to power the lights and electrical appliances in your home. Solar power is dependent on the sun and wind power is dependent on the wind. sun light nor the wind will diminish so you don’t need to worry about renewable energy sources being depleted. Within a few hours, any home in the world can begin to run on free solar power.

One can install solar panels for under $200 a piece. Or harness the power of the sun using materials from your local hardware store. Using this power a person could save on his home’s electricity and heating bills, the panels could be paid for themselves within a few short months of use. You can also take these portable panels with you on camping trips so that you and your family can enjoy the basic amenities made available by electricity. In case of an emergency, the electricity provided by the panels can be used to power cell phones and radios depending on how ambitious of an energy saver you are, it is possible to have virtually all your home’s power generated from just the solar panels.

We all can benefit from the power of the sun and wind power. Much like that of the solar panels, homemade windmills can be made from basic hardware store products. However, unlike solar panels, these windmills can be created for less than a measly $100 using easy construction methods. With your home running on both solar and wind power, your energy independence and monetary savings will being to skyrocket. Wind power can be a back up to your solar system on overcast days or in the winter. Having more than one backup is great, you can always backup to the local power company. You will no longer go to sleep worrying how expensive the price of natural gas or electricity will be in just a few short months.

Cost like most things will eventually drop to be even more affordable as time goes on. Claim your energy independence and refuse to consume overpriced gas and electricity from today’s conglomerates. Do it yourself renewable energy guides on the internet offer a very easy way for the average person to look at going green and start saving money. Building your own energy system is the only realistic option. Professionally installed wind turbines and solar panels can cost be extremly costly. Research assists you in breaking away from the stranglehold that the world’s governments and economies that have put on the price of this modern necessity.

Biodiesel Fuel

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
David Tanguay asked:

Biodiesel fuel is a form of “green energy for cars.” Although a debate on the pros and cons regarding biodiesel seems to be pretty endless, those advocating it speak quite highly of how fueling your car with biodiesel is a pretty amazing thing.

So, what is biodiesel? “Biodiesel Fuel can be produced from a variety of natural crops including rapeseed, soybean, mustard, flax, sunflower, canola, palm oil, hemp, jatropha and waste vegetable oils. This fuel source is said to reduce engine wear and produce less harmful emissions. Biodiesel is used as an alternative fuel source, but requires engine modifications.”

As stated, biodiesel can be created from numerous different resources. According to AgriFuels, “the oil and fats used to produce biodiesel will dictate important properties of the fuel, such as cold flow, energy content, and oxidative stability. Cold flow has to do with the temperature at which the fuel crystallizes. In regards to energy content, AgriFuels asserts that saturated fats have more energy. Oxidative stability deals the antioxidants. Some oils, such as soy, have antioxidants that lead to a longer shelf-life.

Various oil and grease can subsequently create biodiesel. Let’s take a brief look at a few of the various biodiesel fuel derivatives, both sources that are currently used and future prospects, that AgriFuels advocates in order to get an idea of this:

* Virgin oil is vegetable oil that is usually grown, crushed, pressed, and filtered for the oil and other co-products, such as meal. Many different oil bearing crops are grown around the world.

* Soybean Oil is the most common virgin oil for Biodiesel in the USA. Farmers in the Mid-west can grow use a soybean for oil, animal feed, and other products such as vitamin E.

* Rapeseed Oil is the most common oil for Biodiesel in Europe. Rapeseed oil is also very common in Canada, known as the Canadian variety canola.

* Mustard Seed Oil is oil with a lot of potential. Mustard seed can be used for oil as well as an organic pesticide from the oil.

* Algal Oil might be the next big thing for Biodiesel. Some algaes are 50% oil!

* Recycled Oil is waste restaurant grease or used vegetable oil that is collected and made into Biodiesel. Many restaurants and business currently throw away used oil in the dumpster. Using our waste streams as feedstock for other products is always a sustainable option.

In the search for alternative sustainable energies, producing biodiesel fuel to operate vehicles may be a viable option. It would reduce the amount of “non-green” fossil fuels that are currently in use to power automobiles. In addition, it would diminish the dependence the United States currently has on other countries for oil, and it would increase American jobs on top of that.

There are so many different options to look at in the acquisition of biodiesel fuel, and it could only assist the nation in becoming greener.

Nobody Has Yet Had Any Bad Experiences While Making Biodiesel

Friday, May 15th, 2009
Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

The most convenient and cost effective option for the petroleum diesel is the conversion of oil into diesel. Nearly all the major European vehicle makers now provide their cars with warranties on the use of a pure Biodiesel. Now-a-days the people are making their own Biodiesel in their own home and the home brewing of Biodiesel is completely harmless as nobody has yet had any bad experiences while making Biodiesel.

For freshers, start with the unused or fresh vegetable oil. To prepare your own Biodiesel in your own home, you will need the following things:

* 1 litre of pure cooking oil;

* 250 ml of pure methanol;

* Either Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide;

* A blender;

* Weighing scales that are efficient in measuring upto 0.01 grams.

* 1 litre High Density polythene container;

* 2 bottles for settlingl;

* Duct tape; and

* Thermometer;

All the equipments must be clean and dry. The process of making Biodiesel is as follows:

First make sure that all the parts of the blender are in good condition. You must also check that the blender seals are tightly shut. And all the components are clean and dry. Heat the oil to 550 C and then pour the oil into the blender. Now carefully pour the sodium or potassium methoxide that is prepared from the high density polythene container into the blender. Now seal the lid of the blender and then blend the mixture carefully at low speed for 30 minutes while maintaining the speed and the temperature.

The moment the process is completed, you must pour the mixture carefully into a mini-processor. After the process is completed, allow the mixture to settle for 12 to 24 hours. You will find that the bottle in which the liquid is collected, there are two specific layers. One is yellow and the other is a dark coloured fluid which is glycerin and is a by-product. The upper layer is the Biodiesel. The color of the diesel depends upon the oil used but is generally pale color and is mostly yellow. The diesel might be cloudy or clear, which is not much of a problem. After setting it for some more time, it will clear out.

You must then take a wash test. If it passes through the wash test, then wash the rest of the Biodiesel.

Want to Save a Ton of Cash by Going Green?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009
Max Loodlin asked:

Going green is a great way to help out the environment because green energy does not cause any types of pollution. But how can you save a ton of cash by going green? By making your own natural power. This means building a wind turbine or solar panel somewhere around your house so that you will be producing your own energy. Once you are making your own natural energy you can eliminate up to 80% of your energy bill. Or even better, make some extra cash from your natural energy system.

While building your own wind turbine or solar energy system can be extremely difficult, it can also be very simple. It all comes down to how you approach the subject. You can either try to research the building process of a renewable energy system yourself or you could follow a DIY green energy guide. There is also the option of having a renewable energy system installed, but that will run you anywhere from $3,000-$10,000. Out of these three options, following a DIY home energy guide will be your best bet.

Not only will a guide make the process a whole lot easier, but you will also be saving thousands of dollars. You could realistically build your own green energy system over a weekend for as little as $200.

Within a month your new natural energy source will pay for itself, and after that you will be saving hundreds of dollars every single month. And if you find just the right DIY green energy guide you could start earning some extra cash.

I’ve come across one of the best DIY home energy guide available. But you have to be serious about saving a ton of cash. If you think this is you then click the link below.

Go Green and Get Cash

Sunday, May 10th, 2009
Max Loodlin asked:

Going green can do wonders for the environment, but can it actually earn you cash? Yes, it is very easy to save cash as well as earn it just by going green.

But what exactly does going green involve? Going green basically entails making your own natural energy source. This means that you will be producing your own form of energy rather than having to pay the utility company every month. You could either build a solar panel or wind generator as your source of green energy. Both will warrant amazing results.

I know what you are thinking. Solar panel? Wind generator? Seems to me like spend a thousand dollars, and then spend a few more thousand dollars. This is where many people get caught up in the whole process of going green. They associate what they have seen in the media with what they are trying to accomplish. The truth is, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a professionally installed solar panel or wind generator. You can build them yourself, and you can do it for about $50.

Making your own natural energy source will prove to be just as effective as any professional instalation could ever be. You just need to know where to look as far as a guide for building a natural energy generator.

In the end going green is well worth it. Within a month you will be saving 80% on your energy bill, and if you play your cards right you could start earning money from your utility company. They will pay you if you are producing more energy than you are using. Once you get your natural energy system up and running the benefits will start rolling in. You will have yourself an automated revenue stream in no time!

Go green now, you will not regret it.

A Home for Every Green Heart

Monday, May 4th, 2009
Paige Green asked:

According to the Australian Burean of Statistics, around 56 per cent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions are generated from the home. While it is important that we pressure business and government for sustainable initiatives, some of the easiest changes can be made in our own dwellings. From simple lifestyle changes such as adopting the Green Pages Top 50 tips to a more substantial investment in your home’s design features.

For many, building a sustainable home may seem too challenging, too daunting or just not feasible. Many people claim ‘we can’t afford it’, ‘I already own a home (and am still paying it off!)’, or ‘I’m renting’; these are all ready made excuses that make even the most die-hard greenie resistant to making a more substantial investment in a sustainable home.

‘Money is always one of the major impediments to investing in a sustainable home,’ says Julien Laclave, renewable energy promotions officer for Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZES). A green home can save a family thousands of dollars a year. ‘We can’t force people to invest in a sustainable renovation or a new home, but we can show them that it really pays off.’ Reduced energy bills from renewable energy sources and more comfortable living conditions that don’t require artificial heating or cooling are just some of the benefits of a sustainably designed home.

Lacave is also the project manager of the ANZES Sustainable House Day, a nationwide event that showcases a number of sutainable homes to the public. This year, over 100 homes were on diplsay and visitors could speak directly with the owners and get first hand information about the home and its sustinable features. Lacave finds taht many attendees come to sources ideas for their own projects. ‘People who visit the homes find it very inspiring. It’s very unique to be able to talk wiht the residents,’ he says.

So what’s behind good green design?

Essentially, building a ‘green home’ is to ensure a house is as ’self sustaining’ as possible. Key features include minimising energy use, rainwater harvesting, managing waste water disposal and even sustaining its inhabitants with a lush green garden. Renowned celebrities such as Csate Blanchett have brough popularity to green residences. Sustainable home design is reaching the mainstream. People are realising eco homes make good sense. Households can lower their energy bills by as much as 50 per cent and save on their water bills. Green homes stay comfortable throughout the year without the aid of artificial heating and cooling, which make them a real pleasure to live in. ‘A sustainable house is just a house that is well designed and cleverly thought out’, says Lacave.

The Future of Biodiesel

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009
roosterbob asked:

Presently, biodiesel is one of the trends engulfing the gas guzzling and petrol-pouting consumers. For the former, the reason may lie heavily on the spiking prices posted by the oil industry. If you can save a few dollars by using an additive, why not use it, right? But for the latter, it is more than money saving—it is more on environment saving. Biodiesel is ideal because it is made without any sulfur and is biodegradable, truly a treehugger’s fuel choice, not to mention the huge reduction in general emission.

The Process of Transesterification

This is the process where biodiesel comes into being. The procedure of transesterification literally allows for the extraction of glycerin by adding alcohol and lye to the waste vegetable oil or animal fats collected from various fast food stores and restaurants. Having biodiesel processors will enable you to harness what seems to be slop into an effective fuel alternative.

Note that the oil itself can be obtained from renewable sources like maize, peanuts, soybeans, or any oil-based product for that matter. With this said, if you can extract oil from an item, then most probably you can produce biodiesel out of it. Of course you need the proper biodiesel equipment to actually obtain liquid gold from a pile of sludge.

Varieties & Ratios

Biodiesel comes in a number of mixtures and combinations. This can be blended with different levels of oil or sometimes even used independently. If a biodiesel is mixed with oil, it will be identified as such, or you may look at the pump. It will reflect a letter (B) followed by a number. B, obviously stands for biodiesel then the number attached to it connotes the percentage of the biodiesel used. B20 means twenty percent of the mixture is bio while eighty percent is petro-diesel; same goes with B15 and B60.

If you plan to concoct your own environmentally friendly fuel in large batches, you may opt to buy a biodiesel expansion pack—bigger tanks, thicker hoses, and more bio-fuel for you.

Modification, supply and cost issues

Biodiesel can virtually make any vehicle that feeds on regular diesel run with little or no modification. But for those that require a little tweaking, it is advisable to check with your car manufacturer first before buying any Biodiesel equipment. Although most cars will work fine with biodiesel, it is better to address some warranty concerns.

You can either locate a local biodiesel station or purchase biodiesel processors. Pumping station can easily be found using the internet or let your fingers do the walking on the yellow pages. To be honest, some states have little bio-stations presently in business and the Midwest is paving the way in promoting this eco-friendly alternative.

The cost attached with purchasing biodiesel is fairly less as opposed to its pure petrol equivalent. It is safe to claim that a gallon of Biodiesel will only cost you $1 if you make it on your own. Now think about the pump price for diesel. No wonder why consumers are starting to shift to biodiesel.

While it is nowhere close to being capable of replacing standard fuels, it is certainly well on its way.

Information on Green Power Energy Solutions

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009
Tony Dickfos asked:

The term Green Power encompasses many fields and as our planet’s natural resources are slowly running out, we must find alternatives to replace them. We must take into consideration the serious problem of greenhouse gases and global warming.There are many alternative sources of renewable energy and these are the future technologies that must be developed if we are to provide future generations with a healthy environment in which to live.

Solar power generation is one of the first to spring to mind, it is a totally clean and renewable source of free energy from the sun. It is used to generate electricity to power our homes, offices and factories and to heat water. New technology means wind power generation is gaining in popularity and besides the large scale wind farms, it can also be used for domestic purposes to power our homes as well.

Our Fuel resources are one of the main concerns that have to be dealt with in the future.One of the largest consumers of fuel is the automobile, the ordinary family car, and the trucks that ply our highways, plus a multitude of internal combustion engines used for many different purposes. Alternative fuel sources are constantly being developed, and the most promising seems to be biofuels, which are produced mainly from biomass products such as plant and vegetation matter. Some of these include corn and sugar cane among  others. They are relatively pollution free and extremely environmentally friendly.

Energy conservation also plays a large part, and means reducing the amount of energy used, either by actually using less energy or by reducing the consumption of energy services. Reducing the energy demand can offset the increased amounts of energy needed by a growing population. Energy conservation is often the most economical way to counteract energy shortages. It also enables replacing non-renewable energy resources with renewable ones, such as solar, wind, or hydro power. Further, it can help lessen climate change by lessening the amount of emissions in the atmosphere. It can help keep rising energy costs in check, and facilitate flexibility in the choice of which renewable resources to use instead of non-renewable ones. About half the energy usage in the US is by individual consumers specifically for transportation and residential use. Significant gains are being made in the reesidential area by consumers buying energy efficient vehicles and appliances.

There is a lot of talk these days about hybrid cars. Simply put, hybrid cars combine two-types of power, usuallly gasoline and electricity, in an attempt to increase vehicle efficiency and reduce the amount of gasoline used. Such a car is usually built as an electric car (electric motor and batteries), with a small (usually 10 - 20 horsepower) gas engine that powers a generator to basically serve as a charger for the car’s batteries. There are hybrid cars in almost any category of car you could want: Sedans, SUV’s, coupes, vans, and luxury cars all have hybrid models. With the advances in technology plus the fact that fuel prices are ever increasing has ensured more than ever, the savings that hybrid cars can offer are looking extremely attractive. If hybrid cars are compared to their petrol counterparts, hybrid cars generally attract a higher purchase price, but the whole of life cost of the hybrid technology car may mean you save significant dollars and also help the environment. At this stage nearly every major automobile manufacturer in the world has serious plans to release new models of hybrid cars. Read More

Bristol Channel Proposals Look to Solve Green Energy Issue

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009
Andy Adams asked:

In these days of increased energy costs whether it’s Gas, Oil or Petrol many governments around the world are looking for an alternative that is both cost-effective and kind to our environment.  The green issue seems to be the latest concern of the government in the UK and with oil prices skyrocketing they are keen to levy their dependence on these fuels.

Alternative energy sources have already been introduced sporadically in the UK with wind turbines being placed in windy areas of the country such as just outside Barnsley in South Yorkshire.  The idea has caught on with many wind farms being situated all over the country, much to the ramblers and country folk’s disapproval.

One new proposal involves yet another alternative energy source derived from nature, tidal power.  In January of this year the Welsh Assembly and UK Government launched a study into whether using the Severn estuary to capture href=”http://www.moneysupermarket.com/utilities/cheaper-gas-electricity.aspx”>electricity through tidal power was possible.  After all the River Severn has the second largest tidal range in the world.

There are two different methods being tested for feasibility, being Tidal streams and Tidal ranges.  Tidal streams generate electricity by having large free standing turbines turned by the force of the water, this works in a similar fashion to wind turbines and is considered to have a lower environmental impact.

Environmental impact is a big concern for the initiative as the area is a vital feeding ground for many wading birds and any major installations would disrupt the local wildlife.

The other tidal method, ranges involves a large chain of devices which take advantage of the large difference between low and high tide, and stores water to be released when the tide is low passing it through a turbine which generates the energy that will be used to create href=”http://www.moneysupermarket.com/utilities/cheaper-gas-electricity.aspx”>electricity.  Engineers believe this to be the best method for the Severn estuary but it is much more invasive to local wildlife.

Whilst it is admirable that we are looking to renewable energy and natural means of getting href=”http://www.moneysupermarket.com/utilities/cheaper-gas-electricity.aspx”>electricity it is important that we consider all the implications such as wildlife when we start putting up wind farms and water turbines.
